Christmas Traditions

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is coming. Do you have favorite holiday traditions? Or are you wanting to add a new one? It is always interesting to hear what others love to do. Family traditions are important and worth the effort. Each generation passes along the things that make the happiest memories from recipes to events. We come to expect certain things each December that without them – well Christmas just would not be the same.

Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly…

Sometimes traditions begin accidently. Our first Christmas we had a friend move nearby from another state. He did not have anyone to celebrate Christmas with so we invited him to join us for a day of baking and decorating our Christmas tree and home. That was so much fun that after we moved away the next year, we invited new friends over to do that with us again. And we continue this tradition each year never inviting the same people over twice.

Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree…

When my husband was growing up his Dad ran a model train around the base of their Christmas tree. You can keep it very basic with just the cars on a track. Or make it merrier by adding some fake snow, miniature people, and even a train station.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

Another festive tradition is making and decorating holiday sugar cookies! This is such a fun activity for grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles, cousins, children, and friends to do together. There is just something about making the dough from scratch (or buy it pre-made), setting the table with colorful sprinkles and frosting, passing around the rolling pin, shaped cookie cutters, and getting creative together.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and perfection is never the goal. Getting messy is expected along with lots of laughter and enjoying the sweet treats afterwards and to share with others at gatherings.

O What Fun It Is to Ride…

A favorite for our family is all of us piling into the car and searching for beautiful Christmas light displays! Stopping through a drive through for hot chocolate or ice cream shakes, we continue oohing and awing as we make our rounds each year. Listening and singing along with holiday songs, pausing to snap photos, and taking turns pointing out “look at that one” completes this not so silent night.

Away in a manager…

My sister’s family bake and decorate a Birthday cake to celebrate Jesus’ birth. The kids started out helping when they were young. Anticipation is high as they all look forward to seeing this year’s new design. When ready, everyone sings “Happy Birthday” in remembrance of the reason for this season. Then with their favorite beverage in hand it is time to enjoy the delicious dessert that they created together!

Have yourself a merry little Christmas…

There are so many wonderful Christmas traditions to consider! Of course there is always the shopping, wrapping, gift giving and receiving, arts and crafts, stockings, candy canes, parties, caroling, movies, jingle bells, music, Nutcracker performances, family and friends together for a meal, and entertaining games.

From the simple to the elaborate and the easy to the creative, sharing ideas and this special time with each other is fun!

What are some of your favorite Christmas traditions?
