Does Your Schedule Allow For Flexibility?

Have you ever had one of those days where nothing seemed to go according to plan? Everyone should be able to answer yes, because at some point in all of our lives this happens. The question also insinuates that there was a plan to begin with. Are you a planner?  If not, then this may seem like a foreign concept. I do realize that not all of us function in life the same way. For those of us that like to have a check list, a general idea as to what needs to be accomplished in a set amount of time, or simply have major control issues, then you know what I’m talking about. There were some twists and turns to my day today that would require me to change my course, as well as being a bit flexible. That is not something that comes easily for this girl.

I arrived at work a little later than normal, but not entirely late (I clocked in one minute early). My morning had a bit of a delay prior to even leaving home. I have a definite routine to my mornings, and something unexpected threw off that routine. As I left the house 15 minutes later than normal, I quickly texted my boss to make sure she knew I might be a tad bit late. I usually take time during my morning commute to pray and talk to God. As it turned out, traffic was light and I seemed to hit all of the lights green, which I know was God. I was already having to be a bit flexible with my routine and schedule for the day. So far it hadn’t thrown me too far off track.

I always work off of a “to do” list, so I knew before I left work the day before what I had planned to be working on. Shortly into my morning I realized that things were going to take a bit of a turn from my list. An email from one of our stores was forwarded through our chain of command, and the issue involved some of the products I am responsible for on our web site. As I shifted my thought process to the issue at hand, I realized that I was being led into a rabbit hole of sorts. I’m a process person with a slight tinge of OCD, and what I needed to accomplish was going to make me really think about the proper steps to take to fix the issue successfully and in a timely fashion. It all worked out, but took a while to accomplish. My list for the day didn’t have as many tasks marked off, but an issue was resolved. Victory!

Today I had a meeting scheduled with one of our Buyers. It was originally going to take place in my office. I was prepped and ready with my spreadsheet and discussion questions. About 15 minutes before the meeting she emailed me to see if I could come and meet in her office instead. Oh no, another detour in my day! I gathered my materials and headed to her office in time for the meeting. When I arrived she explained that she needed to have access to spreadsheets and information on her computer for issues we would be covering in our meeting. She was right, and we had a great meeting!

Do you see how this day unfolded? Though there were detours I didn’t let it frazzle me. Everything worked out the way it was supposed to. I am certain there will be other days much like this one. What I have learned is that God orchestrates our lives according to His plan. It may not be in the order of my “to do” list, or even in the timeframe that I believe is necessary. But, it is ok!  I know that God has the plan, and I am just here to live it out serving and trusting Him. This day brought this verse to mind:

Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Matthew 6:34(ESV)

Have a great day, and make sure you allow for some flexibility in life! God’s got you!
