Creative Journaling: How to Get Started

Have you noticed how much of a trend that journaling has become lately? It seems more and more people are catching the bug to get their thoughts, ideas, goals and dreams on paper. Yes, I said paper. Though I am fully aware that there are many electronic ways to document the daily happenings in our lives, I have read that studies have identified incredible benefits of writing by hand.

Here are just a few of those benefits:

Great for mental health and overall well-being.

Write about future goals, pressures from a stressful job, difficulty with relationships, a particular blessing God has given, a Scripture verse that helped get you through the day, a song lyric that really touched your heart, and the list goes on. If you struggle with stress, depression, or anxiety, keeping a journal can help gain control of emotions in order to improve mental health.

Helps when juggling too many thoughts at the same time.

By writing down thoughts and giving form to ideas in our mind, we can achieve improved mental clarity. What a sense of freedom to be able to get all of that out of our head. The best part is that it doesn’t have to be in any particular order. Just write it down.

Helps solve problems by improving overall focus.

The visual reminder of what has been written down keeps us systematically on track.

Improves insight and understanding into who you really are.

Sharing the things you love or dislike about yourself, what makes you happy or sad, what motivates or inspires you, lessons God is teaching you … all of that contributes to who you are. Don’t be afraid to document what your big dreams and goals are!

Tracks overall development by seeing step-by-step progress.

The repetition of doing this on a consistent basis can help us understand ourselves better. By keeping track of daily actions you can look back and see the significance, the impact it made, and how far you’ve come.

Helps with spiritual growth.

It’s not about writing about complex things, but simply a personal recollection of our innermost thoughts. Writing can help you build better habits, and forces you to be aware of your actions and behaviors.

Whether you are a journal enthusiast, just beginning to journal, or have it in the dark recesses of your thought process, it is important to figure out your “why”. What is your reason to journal? Have you seen others journal and were intrigued by it, or perhaps read someone else’s that touched your heart? The beauty of journaling is that it enables you to record the little things for later reference – a meal, a feeling, a moment in time, a hairstyle, a nail color, a kind gesture. And keep in mind that it’s ok to document about struggles, wins, relationships, and anything in your everyday life. By doing this you will have a better connection with your values, emotions, and goals.

Now that you know the benefits of journaling, and have an idea what your “why” is, it’s time to find a journal that fits your own personal style so that you can officially begin your journey! We carry many different styles, colors, sizes, and themes. Though we carry journals from several different vendors, we are very excited about our Mardel exclusive brand of journals called SoulScripts.

It’s time to jump in and begin to journal! As you’ve seen, there are benefits to journaling that would be well worth your time. Everyone has a “why” as to the direction they want their journal to take. Decide what yours is, and just start. And the best part is that Mardel can provide you the perfect journal to reflect your style and personality. It’s up to you on how you fill the blank pages, and where your journey will take you. But isn’t it worth it?
