Creative Journaling: How to Get Started

Have you noticed how much of a trend that journaling has become lately? It seems more and more people are catching the bug to get their thoughts, ideas, goals and dreams on paper. Yes, I said paper. Though I am fully aware that there are many electronic ways to document the daily happenings in our lives, I have read that studies have identified incredible benefits of writing by hand.

Here are just a few of those benefits:

Great for mental health and overall well-being.

Write about future goals, pressures from a stressful job, difficulty with relationships, a particular blessing God has given, a Scripture verse that helped get you through the day, a song lyric that really touched your heart, and the list goes on. If you struggle with stress, depression, or anxiety, keeping a journal can help gain control of emotions in order to improve mental health.

Helps when juggling too many thoughts at the same time.

By writing down thoughts and giving form to ideas in our mind, we can achieve improved mental clarity. What a sense of freedom to be able to get all of that out of our head. The best part is that it doesn’t have to be in any particular order. Just write it down.

The repetition of doing this on a consistent basis can help us understand ourselves better. By keeping track of daily actions you can look back and see the significance, the impact it made, and how far you’ve come.

It’s not about writing about complex things, but simply a personal recollection of our innermost thoughts. Writing can help you build better habits, and forces you to be aware of your actions and behaviors.
